About Poppa Cigar

Poppa Cigar is a 10 piece Afrofunk band on Boston’s North Shore.

Formed in the Summer of 2014, the now 10 piece strong Poppa Cigar is a rotating cast of some of the North Shore’s most devoted musicians. The band got together because there was mutual respect for Fela Kuti, Tony Allen and the Afrobeat rhythms of Nigeria, and a desire to make music that was inspired by the rhythms of Africa in general, music that incorporated a driving horn section and music that got people dancing and thinking. With members of some of the area’s most renowned bands like The Bandit Kings, Groove Therapy, Funk du Jour and The Runaround – Poppa Cigar is an all-star experience that brings together elements from many other genres with the rhythms of West African High Life, Afrobeat, Afrofunk, Afropop, Brazilian Street music, and good ole fashioned American Funk.
